How to Build Layered Compositions in Ditther

Some of the strongest Ditther work comes from treating the canvas like a layered layout system. Backgrounds, masks, shapes, type, and image effects become much more useful once you decide what sits behind, what leads, and what should partially reveal through the rest.

Layer order creates depth. Start simple and only add more elements when each layer has a clear job.

Layering workflow

1

Start with the back layer

Choose a gradient or background first so the rest of the composition has a setting.

2

Place one hero image

Keep one image layer in charge. Additional visual elements should support it instead of competing with it.

3

Use masks and shapes to carve depth

Masks help create reveals and crops. Shapes can act like framing devices or panels inside the composition.

4

Add type after the structure exists

Text becomes easier to place once the depth system is already working.

5

Refine ordering and export

Move layers until the eye travels cleanly from background to hero to information.

Composition rule

If everything feels equally important, the layer order probably still needs work.
